At Silverton Veterinary Practice we will soon be able to offer laparoscopy or ‘key-hole surgery’ as it’s better known as. This can be used for many procedures, but most commonly in the veterinary practice for Bitch Spays.
This new service is due to start on the 26th November 2019.
There are many benefits to having your pet operated on laparoscopically, here names a few;
- A smaller wound – three small incisions are made which are approx. 1cm in size, these will usually heal much faster than the larger wounds needed for standard spays, especially for larger dogs.
- Better visibility for the surgeon – The surgeon is looking at a screen where everything is magnified, thus finding what they’re looking for much faster.
- Less pain – animals show much less pain following this procedure as the surgeon’s hands are not entering a body cavity, the uterus is left inside and only the ovaries are removed which causes a lot less pain for the patient on recovery.
Laparoscopic surgery is not suitable for every patient and your pet would need a consultation with one of the veterinary surgeons before going ahead, but if your pet is suitable for this procedure then that’s great news for your furry friend!
